Summoning of European Envoys to Iran’s Foreign Ministry
WANA (Mar 13) – In protest against the collusion of the UK, France, and Germany with the U.S. in exploiting the UN Security Council’s mechanisms to hold a closed-door meeting on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, the heads of these countries’ diplomatic missions in Tehran were summoned to Iran’s Foreign Ministry today.
The closed meeting, held on Wednesday, March 12, at the UN Security Council, led to the summoning of the British, German, and French envoys to Iran’s Foreign Ministry. In response to this development and in protest against the three European signatories of the JCPOA for aligning with the U.S. to misuse the Security Council’s framework, these envoys were summoned on Thursday, March 13, by Mohammad Hassan-Nejad Pirkouhi, Director-General for Peace and International Security at the Foreign Ministry.
Iran had previously expressed its strong objection to the meeting. Abbas Araghchi, head of Iran’s diplomatic apparatus, stated on Wednesday: “This meeting represents a completely new and strange precedent, and from our perspective, it is surprising. It seriously calls into question the good faith of the countries that requested it. We hope the Security Council will properly fulfill its responsibility for international peace and security and not fall for certain countries’ political maneuvers and misinformation.”
A Provocative and Political Act in Line with the U.S. Unilateral Agenda
According to Fars News Agency, during the summoning session, which was attended by the French and German ambassadors and the British chargé d’affaires (in the absence of the ambassador), Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly protested against the irresponsible and provocative stance of the three countries.
Addressing the European envoys, the Director-General for Peace and International Security stated: “Iran’s peaceful nuclear program is fully in line with its rights and obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its Safeguards Agreement.”
He further emphasized: “Iran’s nuclear activities do not contradict the JCPOA, which was established as a framework for Iran’s voluntary confidence-building measures in exchange for the lifting of unjust and illegal sanctions. Under the JCPOA, Iran is entitled to partially or fully suspend its commitments in response to the other parties’ breaches of the agreement.”
The Iranian official also underscored that the Security Council’s closed-door meeting on Iran’s nuclear program lacks any technical or legal justification and is a politically motivated and provocative action aligning with the U.S.’s unilateral and destabilizing policies.
A Disruptive Intervention in the IAEA’s Technical Mission
During the session, Iranian officials pointed out that the European countries’ compliance with the U.S.’s illegitimate request to convene the Security Council meeting effectively supports a country that unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, violating UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and causing subsequent negative developments regarding the agreement.
The European envoys were also reminded that just days ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors held a meeting where member states expressed their views on Iran’s nuclear program. Holding another Security Council meeting on Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities was described as “a disruptive and discrediting intervention in the IAEA’s technical mission that undermines the normal cooperation between Iran and the Agency.”
The three European diplomats stated that they would relay Iran’s objections to their respective capitals.
On the same night, Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, also objected to the meeting at the Security Council, calling it “an unjustified interference in the constructive and ongoing engagement between Iran and the IAEA.” He firmly stated: “We will not accept any imposed dictates, and any attempt to coerce Iran into accepting an unfair agreement is doomed to fail.”
