Tehran Dialogues Seek Greater Global Role for Persian Gulf
WANA (May 17) – The Deputy for International Affairs of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) emphasized the importance of the upcoming Tehran Dialogues Forum in strengthening the Persian Gulf region’s role in the international system.
Behrouz Kamalvandi, Deputy for International, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs of the AEOI, commented on a meeting between Iran’s Foreign Minister and the AEOI chief with members of the international Pugwash organization.
He said: “The meeting with members of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs—an organization known for promoting nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation—was essentially a prelude to the Tehran Dialogues Forum, which is scheduled to take place over the next two days.”
He noted that the Tehran Dialogues Forum, launched in 2018, has held discussions over the past seven years with the participation of various figures from different countries and the region.
“The purpose of these dialogues is to ensure the region, especially the Persian Gulf, finds its rightful place within the arrangements of the international system,” Kamalvandi stated.
“Political, cultural, security, and economic issues in this strategic region, all of which are of global importance, will be discussed by officials and personalities from various regional countries.”
The spokesperson for the AEOI added that planning has been made for 40 panels covering political, cultural, security, and economic topics during the Tehran Dialogues Forum.
He continued: “Regional countries must work together in a coordinated manner in order to manage affairs jointly and secure their rightful standing in the international arena. Based on this perspective, Mr. Eslami invited the Foreign Minister and Pugwash officials to discuss and exchange views on the most important actions and achievements of Iran’s nuclear industry.”
Kamalvandi explained that Pugwash is committed to human values and international issues and is a platform for science and global affairs. “Given the high significance of science in our region, this process can be of great value.”
Referring to the political nature of the debate around Iran’s nuclear program, Kamalvandi stressed: “There must be planning to help the international community further develop peaceful nuclear science and technology worldwide, and this crucial matter must not be overlooked.”
He added: “Alongside disarmament and non-proliferation discussions, the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology must also be addressed, as it is of great importance.”
The Deputy for International Affairs of the AEOI also noted: “According to Article 4 of the NPT, signatory states have the right to fully benefit from nuclear knowledge, technology, and industry.”
Kamalvandi concluded by saying that the Tehran Dialogues Forum is being held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of its Center for Political and International Studies. “This year’s conference is expected to host a significant number of globally recognized figures, including several foreign ministers from regional countries.”
The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, established in 1955 by Bertrand Russell and Albert Einstein, is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing science and addressing global challenges with a focus on humanity. The organization supports peaceful uses of nuclear energy as part of its broader mission to benefit humanity through scientific development.
