WANA (Dec 21) – A rare and complex trachea reconstruction surgery was successfully performed at Kosar Educational, Research, and Treatment Center in Semnan province of Iran, saving the life of a 17-year-old patient.

The hospital’s director, Dr. Mohammad Foroozesh-Fard, announced on Saturday that the operation marked only the fifth globally documented case in the past 18 years. He emphasized the rarity of such procedures, which are often the sole option to save patients from certain death.

The patient, who was a 17-year-old motorcyclist, sustained a complete trachea transection after colliding with a barrier rope, causing severe damage to the front of his neck.

According to Dr. Hamidreza Hemmati, a thoracic surgeon, the patient arrived at the hospital 36 hours after the accident, suffering from extreme breathing difficulties, voice impairment, and severe airway obstruction. Initial examinations revealed a complete rupture of the trachea, with the severed portion descending seven centimeters into the chest cavity.

“To secure a reliable airway, we first used local anesthesia and inserted a tube through bronchoscopy to access the severed trachea,” Dr. Hemmati explained. “The surgical team then successfully reconstructed and reconnected the trachea, ensuring the patient could breathe independently again.”

The surgery was carried out by a skilled medical team, including Dr. Hamidreza Hemmati, thoracic surgeon; Dr. Setareh Soltani and Dr. Siamak Khatami, general surgeons; Dr. Babak Hosseinzadeh, anesthesiologist; and an experienced operating room team.

It is reported that following a week of recovery, the patient was discharged in good health, marking a remarkable success in the field of thoracic surgery.

Semnan Province, known for its vast geographical area, is served by two medical universities. Kosar Hospital provides critical healthcare services to residents of Semnan, Mahdishahr, Sorkheh, Damghan, Garmsar, and Aradan counties.

This successful surgery not only highlights the hospital’s advanced capabilities in handling rare and life-threatening cases but also Iran’s improvement in medical science.
