UAE Reiterates Claims Over Iranian Islands at UN General Assembly
WANA (Oct 01) – During the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Shakhbout Nahyan Al Nahyan, repeated the UAE’s claims over three Iranian islands.
In his speech on Monday, he urged Iran to respond to the UAE’s calls for resolving the issue either through direct negotiations or via the International Court of Justice.
The three islands—Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb—are located in the Persian Gulf and are internationally recognized as part of Iran, but the UAE has long laid claim to them.
In response, Nasser Kanaani, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemned a previous joint statement by the U.S. and UAE on the islands, asserting that the islands are an integral part of Iran’s territory.
He emphasized that any third-party remarks on the matter are baseless and invalid. Kanaani also noted that repeated claims by the UAE and its political statements with other parties have no legal standing and do not alter the islands’ status or Iran’s sovereignty over them.
