UN Chief and Iranian FM Discuss Regional Tensions and Humanitarian Crisis
WANA (Oct 16) – In a phone call between António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, held on Tuesday evening, the latest regional developments were discussed and exchanged.
During the conversation, the Iranian Foreign Minister, referring to the catastrophic humanitarian situation caused by the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the Israeli regime’s aggression against Lebanon, urged the UN Secretary-General to utilize all capacities of the international body to stop Israel’s crimes and aggressions and to send humanitarian aid to Lebanon and Gaza.
Araghchi reiterated Iran’s position on the necessity of maintaining peace and stability in the region, emphasizing that while the Islamic Republic of Iran is making comprehensive efforts to safeguard regional peace and security, it is fully prepared to respond decisively and regretfully to any adventurism by the Israeli regime. He stressed that the responsibility for the consequences of increased insecurity in the region would lie with this regime and its main supporter, the United States.
The UN Secretary-General, expressing concern over the escalating tensions in the region following continued Israeli attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, stressed the need for political solutions to end the war and the importance of providing aid to the victims and displaced people affected by the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon.
Guterres also emphasized the importance of protecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and assessed the continued deployment of UN peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon, despite the threats against them, as part of this effort.
The two sides also exchanged views on the situation in Yemen and the humanitarian crisis in the country.
