WANA (Apr 19) – As the second round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States kicks off in Italy, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, announced his presence in Rome and underscored the vital importance of diplomacy at this critical juncture.

Grossi took to the social platform X on Saturday to share an update, writing: “Met Antonio Tajani (Italy’s FM) today in Rome. I welcome Italy’s constructive and increasingly relevant role in support of peace at a critical moment when diplomacy is much needed.

The second round of Iran–U.S. indirect talks is scheduled to take place today (Saturday, April 19), with mediation by Oman. The first round was held last Saturday in Muscat, Oman. Like the previous round, today’s negotiations are being conducted indirectly, facilitated by Oman’s Foreign Minister.

Earlier this morning, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani met with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, in Rome. Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s support for the Iran–U.S. dialogue and expressed his country’s longstanding interest in strengthening bilateral relations. He also conveyed Italy’s readiness to assist in any way possible to help the talks succeed.

During the meeting, Araghchi emphasized Iran’s continued commitment to diplomacy and its long-standing history of engagement with the international community on nuclear issues.

He emphasized the need for all parties to seize the current opportunity to reach a rational and balanced understanding—one that respects Iran’s legitimate rights and lifts unlawful sanctions, while also addressing any concerns about the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program through voluntary confidence-building measures.
