WANA (Jan 04) – Iran is enhancing its economic and political ties with BRICS nations, particularly China, India, and Russia while maintaining a balanced foreign policy that includes potential engagement with Western countries, Iran’s government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani announced.

Speaking about the country’s expanding international partnerships, Mohajerani revealed plans to sign a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Russia on January 17. The agreement includes key initiatives such as completing the North-South Corridor, a strategic trade route, and advancing plans for the transfer of Russian gas to Iran.

Regional Connectivity and Infrastructure Projects

Iran is also focusing on major infrastructure projects to solidify its role as a global transit hub. According to Mohajerani, the government is actively pursuing the development of the Astara-Rasht railway, with land acquisition and other preparatory work already underway. She noted that this project underscores Iran’s commitment to leveraging its geostrategic position, reminiscent of its historical role in facilitating trade along the Silk Road.

Strengthening BRICS Cooperation

Mohajerani highlighted Iran’s strong economic and political ties with BRICS nations, which account for 40% of the world’s population. She noted that recent meetings between President Pezeshkian and leaders of BRICS countries, including China, India, and Russia, have paved the way for deeper collaboration. The 2021 signing of a 25-year strategic partnership agreement with China exemplifies Iran’s commitment to strengthening its position in the East.

Encouraging Foreign Investment

Iran is taking steps to address barriers to foreign investment. A newly formed government task force is working to identify and remove obstacles, especially for projects involving BRICS nations and European investors. Mohajerani stressed that Iran is committed to providing guarantees for foreign investors and ensuring transparency in agreements, emphasizing the need for balanced, mutually beneficial partnerships.

Balanced Foreign Policy

Reiterating Iran’s commitment to a balanced foreign policy, Mohajerani emphasized the country’s readiness for constructive negotiations with Western nations on lifting sanctions and advancing its nuclear program. She highlighted Iran’s guiding principles of “dignity, wisdom, and expediency” and stated that regional cooperation with neighbors remains a top priority.

Protecting National Interests

Addressing concerns about international agreements, Mohajerani assured that all major deals, such as the upcoming Iran-Russia agreement, will undergo parliamentary review to safeguard national interests. She emphasized that Iran has learned from past experiences and is determined to avoid unfavorable treaties.

Iran’s Global Vision

Mohajerani concluded by underscoring Iran’s proactive approach to diplomacy. From deepening ties with BRICS nations to creating opportunities for foreign investment, Iran aims to leverage its strategic location to achieve sustainable development and strengthen its global standing.

This strategy, she noted, reflects Iran’s dedication to fostering regional stability while engaging with diverse international partners.
