US Plan for Palestinian Forced Displacement Violates Human Rights
WANA (Feb 19) – Iran’s representative to the United Nations stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the U.S. colonial plan for the forced displacement of Palestinians from their homeland, calling it a blatant violation of international law and a severe infringement on fundamental human rights.
Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, expressed appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for convening a timely and high-level open debate at the UN Security Council on “Pragmatism in Multilateralism: Reform and Improvement of Global Governance.” He also thanked Wang Yi and the UN Secretary-General for their valuable insights and emphasis on the vital role of multilateralism.
Iravani stressed that multilateralism is essential for addressing global challenges and requires adherence to international law, transparency, and accountability. However, trust in multilateral institutions is eroding due to the selective application of international law, unilateral sanctions, and violations of the principle of sovereign equality among nations.
He elaborated on the following points:
1. Multilateral mechanisms lose credibility when misused for advancing specific political agendas. The selective enforcement of international norms, the imposition of unlawful unilateral sanctions, and the use of economic pressure tactics undermine the core principles of multilateralism. The United States and its Western allies, who impose illegal unilateral coercive measures, must be held accountable for the suffering, deaths, and destruction inflicted upon targeted nations, including my own. These actions constitute gross violations of international law and fundamental human rights.
2. The UN Security Council must fulfill its responsibility for conflict resolution through multilateral cooperation. However, its current structure fails to reflect global power shifts and the legitimate aspirations of nations from the Global South. To restore its credibility, the Council must become more representative, democratic, and accountable. A more inclusive structure with fair regional representation would significantly enhance its legitimacy and effectiveness. Unfortunately, certain permanent members have repeatedly turned the Council into a tool for advancing their political interests. A stark example of this is the United States’ persistent use of its veto power to shield Israel from accountability for systematic violations of international law and the UN Charter, particularly its genocidal crimes against the Palestinian people and its aggression against regional countries. Gaza rightfully belongs to the Palestinian people, and the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemns the U.S. colonial plan for their forced displacement, calling it a flagrant breach of international law and a gross violation of fundamental human rights.
3. The global financial system, shaped by outdated institutions, requires fundamental reforms to ensure the fair participation of developing nations. Marginalizing these countries has deepened inequalities and weakened sustainable development.
Iran’s representative at the UN emphasized that the world faces a critical choice: either allow divisions and unilateralism to dominate global affairs or reaffirm commitment to a fair, just, and rules-based international order upheld by the United Nations.
Iravani outlined key actions needed to establish a just international order:
First, global governance must be based on fair, open, and transparent negotiations, ensuring that disputes are resolved through diplomacy rather than coercion and threats.
Second, the UN must guarantee equitable access to technology, resources, and trade for all nations to foster sustainable growth.
Third, closer cooperation between the UN and regional organizations such as the African Union, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS would enhance collective security and economic resilience.
He concluded by reaffirming that the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a founding member of the United Nations, remains committed to effective multilateralism based on international law and the principles of the UN Charter.
